The Ministry of the Environment has posted an update of the document entitled “Soil and Ground Water and Sediment Standards for Use Under Part XV.1 of the Environmental Protection Act” (Site Condition Standards) published by the Ministry and dated March 9, 2004, which is part of Ontario Regulation 153/04.
The Brownfield Site Condition Standards were last updated in 1996 when the Ministry released the “Guideline for Use at Contaminated Sites in Ontario”. The EBR posting indicates that there is a need to review the standards and models to update them them with current science, given that most of the existing generic standards that are currently used at contaminated sites in Ontario were developed between 1985 and 1996.
The posting includes a 400 page document “Rationale for the Development of Generic Soil and Ground Water Standards for Use at Contaminated Sites in Ontario”, which describes the procedures that are used for derivation of the new Tables of Site Condition Standards. This proposal has been posted for a 60 day public review and comment period starting March 23, 2007, with the deadline for comments being May 22, 2007.
