No straight grants of review at the Supreme Court’s January 31 conference

At its conference this Wednesday, the Supreme Court didn’t add any cases to its docket.  No straight grants — i.e., granting review with the expectation of issuing an opinion after briefing on the merits and oral argument.  Not even any grant-and-holds.  There were grant-and-transfer orders in five criminal cases, but those make work just for the tranferee Court of Appeal; until, of course, the Supreme Court is asked to review the Court of Appeal’s action on remand. Conference actions of note include: Four of the five transfer cases direct reconsideration in light of legislation enacted last year that gives superior courts discretion they didn’t have to strike certain firearms sentence enhancements.
