New bicycle helmet testing finds ‘urban’ models may provide less protection than sleeker helmets

By Casey Clark CHICAGO (June 27, 2018) – In 2016 alone, at least 840 bicyclists were killed in crashes, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Half of those killed were even wearing helmets. According to a new study released this week, older, “urban” bicycle helmet styles that appear to cover more of a cyclist’s head actually end up offering less protection than some of the sleeker, open “Road Helmet” models. Researchers tested 30 different models, and while they found all helmets provide solid protection against skull fractures, very few offer enough protection against concussions. However, four models in particular provide cyclists with exceptional protection. These four models are: “Bontrager Ballista MIPS,” “Garneau Raid MIPS,” “Bell Stratus MIPS,” and “Specialized Chamonix MIPS.” You may have noticed that the top four helmets all had “MIPS” in the name.…
