Essay in the Boston Review

Today I have a response piece up on the Boston Review, responding to an intriguing essay by Bruce Schneier and CIS affiliate Henry Farrell about how to protect democracy against what they call "information attacks" designed to undermine the public's trust in elections and other institutions for civic participation. My argument is that in dealing with this difficult challenge, we must not be too quick to sacrifice competing democratic values — in particular, anonymous speech, which has a robust tradition in American society. I appreciate the opportunity to engage with Schneier and Farrell on this thorny topic, which resists any easy answers, and I look forward to reading their further work on the issue.
