A Colorado woman may be the second person in that state to die from the cantaloupe listeriosis outbreak that now stretches from West Virginia to California. The victim was a 48-year-old mother of three who died Tuesday, September 20 at Parker Adventist Hospital about three weeks after she became ill, according to a story on TheDenverChannel.com "It went from … her having cardiac arrest at the hospital to being in a coma," the victim's daughter said in the story. "I just definitely wouldn't want to see anybody else have to go through this." State health officials say testing will be needed to confirm if the death is part of the outbreak that includes 35 confirmed cases and 4 deaths in 10 states according to the latest information from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC.) The outbreak has been linked to Rocky Ford cantaloupes from Jensen Farms in Holly, Colo., which has issued a recall for cantaloupe shipped from July 29 through September 10, 2011, because it potentially may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes, the foodborne pathogen that causes listeriosis. The number of infected persons confirmed in each state so far is as follows: California (1), Colorado (12), Illinois (1), Indiana (1), Montana (1), Nebraska (4), New Mexico (5), Oklahoma (6), Texas (3), and West Virginia (1).
