I read an article suggesting that bankruptcy was not out of the question for the Postal Service. And I couldn't disagree with the points that were being made in the article. By in large, the government can't run businesses. That's because a business can't, in general, just raise taxes or print money. So a business has to be smart enough to figure out what it's core function may be, and how to do that for less money than people are willing to pay for that function. Some folks on television shows sneer at profit, but the profit motive has produced more wealth and happiness for people in the United States than all folks in all the state-run countries of the world, forever. Just one of those things. Now, I wouldn't want to see the Postal Service shut down tomorrow, because then Post Office Employees would need to file bankruptcy. But if it is shut down, I'd also want to see Postal Service Employees get massive preferences in hiring in some other Government Job. Why? Because unemployment causes suffering, and even the official government numbers show more than 15% unemployment right now (see the U-6 measure of unemployment; it turned my hair white!).
