When to Update Your Will

Whenever a major life event happens—marriage, divorce, or the birth of a child—you should sit down with your attorney and review your estate plan. But even when your life situation remains the same, it’s still a good idea to review your will and other estate planning documents periodically. Laws can change, and you may want to update your estate plan to reflect these changes. You may also wish to add a new heir to your will, change your executor, or make other minor changes. Reviewing your will also gives you a chance to think about your choices again. You may have forgotten exactly what you included in your will if it’s been a few years.
