Vessel Crewmember Injured by Falling Equipment

A crew member on a bulk carrier sustained serious injuries over the weekend when a heavy piece of machinery fell on him. According to the Coast Guard Air Station Miami, officers received a call from the Chinese-flagged motor vessel De Ming Hei , saying that one of the crew members on board had suffered serious injuries after being crushed by a large, 1,100 pound piece of machinery. The Coast Guard launched a rescue effort. The injured crew member was airlifted to Miami, where he was taken to the hospital. There is no information about his condition. Injuries caused by falling objects or flying debris are common hazards in a maritime workplace. Workers may be struck by falling loads, and injured by equipment. Injuries caused in such types of accidents are often very serious, and include crushing injuries and spinal cord injuries. There is no information about what caused this particular accident, and it's too early to tell. However, large pieces of machinery weighing more than 1,000 pounds don't just snap off and fall on unsuspecting workers.
