A tow-vessel operator, whose vessel was involved in an accident on the James River in Virginia that left a 13-year-old boy dead, has been charged with involuntary manslaughter. The boy's father has also been charged with involuntary manslaughter in the accident in October that involved a collision between a commercial towing vessel and a bass fishing boat. The boy was a passenger in his father's 19-foot bass fishing boat when it collided with a commercial towboat in the shipping channel on the James River. The boy sustained serious injuries, and was rushed to the hospital where he died later. According to local law enforcement, the boats were traveling at high speeds at the time. Now, the boy's father and the operator of the towboat have been charged with involuntary manslaughter. Driving at unsafe speeds is just as dangerous on the water as it is on land. Boat operators are required to operate a vessel at safe speeds. This is even more important during the summer when you can expect to run across higher maritime traffic. A maritime collision involving two vessels traveling at high speeds can have devastating consequences. In December 2009, a boating accident in California involving a Coast Guard patrol boat in San Diego killed a young boy. Investigators later found that the Coast Guard boat had been traveling at excessive speeds. The risk of injuries and fatalities in maritime accidents involving high-speeds is too great to ignore.
