Surprising Facts About Divorce in the Bible Belt

Who are more likely to get divorced – couples in the South or those in the Northeast? The answer may surprise you. Men and women in the South have higher rates of marriage and higher rates of divorce, while those in the Northeast actually have the lowest rates. According to a recent report from the U.S. Census Bureau, the divorce rates in the South are 10.2 per 1,000 for men and 11.1 per 1,000 for women, whereas those in the Northeast were only 7.2 and 7.5 per 1,000. By comparison, the national divorce rate is 9.2 for men and 9.7 for women. Some of the key factors in these statistical differences are believed to be the age at which couples marry and their level of education (or lack thereof).
