Start of 2011 Atlantic Hurricane Season

June 1, 2011, marked the start of the Atlantic Hurricane Season. To assure maximum preparedness, various agencies have published helpful tips for the maritime community. The Coast Guard Compass, which is the official blog of the U.S. Coast Guard, identifies safety procedures and protocols that vessels can take 72 hours prior to the storm, 24 hours prior to the storm, and then during the storm. The National Hurricane Center, on its Marine Safety page, also provides helpful information for marine safety, including the science behind hurricane paths and guidelines for avoiding hurricanes at sea.
