Here's a great interactive calculator that appeared on the New York Times not too long ago. It allows you to determine whether it is more cost effective for an individual to rent or buy a property. You can run a few variations to determine which would work best for you. Amazingly, if you have a low rent payment, and do not expect the real estate market to grow more than 2% per year over 30 years, renting is the way to go. The only problem with that is that, historically, the real estate market has never grown at a rate of 2% for 30 years. The online calculator may be accessed by clicking this link.
