Recognize the Signs of a Back Injury

A back injury does not have to be sudden for it to be serious or have a devastating impact on your life. Many of the back injury cases that I come across as a maritime lawyer, involve persons who sustain serious due to repetitive stress over a period of time. In fact, back injuries are some of the most common repetitive stress injuries in the workplace. You don't have to suffer sudden shooting pain or inability to move your back muscles to be eligible to file a claim. Often, I notice that a maritime worker may mistake the dull pain that he's suffering as simply the effect of working too hard. It's important to understand that when pain is constant, chronic and shows up only when you perform activities, it can be serious. Here are some of the lesser-known symptoms of a back injury that you need to be looking out for. Lower back pain Pain radiating down the leg Muscle spasms Pain that is apparent only when you perform certain tasks, and disappears when you rest Numbness or weakness in the leg Sudden and unexplained weight loss Any of these signs can point to a back injury, and must be brought to the attention of your doctor. Besides these, there are more serious signs of a back injury that include loss of bowel and bladder movements, severe weakness in the lower limbs and chronic and severe pain. These symptoms must not be ignored-they are not normal by a long shot. If you're a maritime worker with a back injury, you likely have questions about the impact of this injury on your career and your future employment. Consult with a maritime attorney at my office for a free initial evaluation of your case. You don't have to pay anything to speak with us. Image Courtesy: Flickr – Planetc1
