Both directions of an interstate highway in Mississippi are open again after they were shut down for a while after a barge accident on the Mississippi River last week. Part of the Mississippi River was closed down after the accident which involved several loaded barges that broke free, and crashed into a bridge. According to the US Coast Guard, approximately 30 barges were being towed, and 16 barges became loose. One of the barges sank as a result, and another became pinned against the bridge. River conditions were quite rough at the time. According to the US Coast Guard, that particular bend of the river can be quite difficult to navigate even in normal conditions. Those challenges simply become more difficult when there is high water. There were fears about structural damage to the bridge, but those fears have been unfounded. Inspectors from the Louisiana Department of Transportation have analyzed the structure of the bridge for any signs of damage, and none have been found. The bridge was open three hours after it was inspected. Now, traffic is moving swiftly across the interstate again. Fortunately, no injuries were reported in this accident. This is the second time this year that there has been a barge accident on the Mississippi River. In February, an accident involving a towboat and a barge led to an oil spill in the Mississippi River. More than 2,000 gallons of oil leaked into the water during the accident which occurred near Port Allen. No injuries were reported in that accident either. However, barge employees are not always as lucky. If you have been injured in a barge accident, contact a maritime attorney at my office for a free evaluation of your case.
