NCAA Settles CTE Lawsuit With Family of Former Texas Player

DALLAS (June 18, 2018) –  The NCAA has settled a lawsuit with the family of former University of Texas football player Greg Ploetz that accused the organization of being responsible for his brain injuries and death decades after his playing career. The former Longhorns defensive lineman played at Texas from 1968 to 1971. He was named Southwest Conference Defensive Player of the Year in his final season. He did not play professionally, but graduated in 1972 and became a teacher. When Ploetz died in 2015, his brain was donated to the Concussion Legacy Foundation at Boston University, where researchers concluded he had extensive brain damage known as chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE).
