Michael Scott on Leadership

One of the topics we'll be covering is how NOT to lead. In honor of Michael Scott's recent departure from The Office (memorialized here), I could think of no better place to start than with a "greatest hits" collection of his leadership lessons over the years: Michael Scott's Leadership Formula: "Adapt. React. Re-adapt. Apt." Employee Development: "We must deceive them so as not to hurt them, and in that way, we honor them." Employee Relations: "I'm friends with everybody in this office. We're all best friends. I love everybody here. But sometimes your best friends start coming into work late and start having dentist appointments that aren't dentist appointments, and that is when it's nice to let them know that you could beat them up." Boss Relations: I don't want somebody sucking up to me because they think I'm going to help their career. I want them sucking up to me because they genuinely love me." Client Relations: "Gift baskets are the essence of class and fanciness." Diversity: "You may look around and see two groups here: white collar, blue collar. But I don't see it that way, and you know why not? Because I am collar-blind." Productivity: "Watching movies at work actually increases productivity because people have to work faster to make up for the time they missed while watching the movie." Communication: "I don't come up with joke e-mails, I'm simply forwarding them on. I don't see the problem there. You wouldn't arrest a guy who was simply delivering drugs from one person to another." Recognition: "Presents are the best way to show someone you care. It's like saying I love you, this many dollars worth." Succession Planning: "What happens to a company if somebody takes their boss away? I will answer your question with a question. It's like what happens to a chicken when you take its head away. It dies. Unless you find a new head. I need to see which one of these people have the skills to be a chicken head."
