A barge company employee suffered injuries last week in an accident when he fell and was trapped between the barge and the Steamboat Wharf. The man was an employee of Toscana Corporation. The accident occurred when the workers on the barge, which is owned by Toscana Corporation, were trying to untie the vessel after unloading material off the barge. Weather conditions were rough on the day of the accident. The man suddenly fell, and became pinned between the Steamboat Wharf and the barge, before falling into the freezing waters. Temperatures were really low, and the water was icy. Other employees of the company were able to jump into the water, and pull him out. The man lost consciousness for a brief period of time, but was able to respond to police officers and emergency medical technicians who responded to the scene. He was airlifted by the Coast Guard to a Boston-area hospital. His condition is reported to be serious. Falling overboard can have serious repercussions during the best of weather, but in icy, frigid weather conditions of the kind that you can expect in January off Nantucket, a worker has a serious risk of drowning and hypothermia. The worker here was lucky that the people around him had the presence of mind to jump into the water and pull them out. Incidents like this are a reminder to maritime lawyers of the continuing danger to maritime workers. Accidents like these don't make the headlines in the manner that the Gulf of Mexico explosion did. However, across the globe, thousands of seamen continue to work in conditions that are often as hazardous.
