The battle over division of responsibility for the Transocean-Deepwater Horizon oil rig explosion last year, rages on. In the latest salvo, Halliburton has filed another lawsuit against BP, alleging that the British company hid important information about the Macondo oil well. Halliburton alleges that this information could have helped prevent the explosion. According to Halliburton, the lawsuit alleges negligent misrepresentation, business disparagement and defamation. The Halliburton lawsuit is the latest in a series of legal actions being pursued by defendants in the explosion, including BP and the owner of the Deepwater Horizon rig, Transocean. BP was the operator of the rig and Halliburton was responsible for the cementing job done on it. Halliburton has released a statement saying that it had received inaccurate information from BP about the oil well before it performed cementing services. Cementing is one of the most critical procedures in drilling because it helps control well pressure, and plays a big part in preventing blowouts. The company says that BP conveniently forgot to include this inaccurate information in the public statements that it released after the tragedy, as well as in the documents that it released to federal investigators. Specifically, Halliburton claims that BP omitted the location of the hydrocarbon zones in the oil well. This location was extremely important to Halliburton for performing cementing services. BT has accused Halliburton of trying to cover up its own liability in the explosion. Earlier this year, BP had filed a lawsuit against Halliburton for $40 billion, claiming that shoddy cementing job contributed to the offshore tragedy.
