Going Gangsta On Gangstas

For those readers who were worried that House Financial Services Committee member Maxine Waters wouldn't have enough on her plate to keep herself occupied, with the House Ethics Committee investigation of her dealings with OneUnited Bank continuing on the road to Nowheresville, rest easy. Waters recently called on the White House to strong arm loan modifications out of all the "gangsta" banks. "It's time for the bully pulpit of the White House to bring the gangsters in, put them around the table and let them know that if they don't come up with loan modifications and keep people in their homes that they've worked so hard for, we're going to tax them out of business," Waters said at a Congressional Black Caucus event in Los Angeles. It's not merely the fact that Maxine doesn't get the irony of her statement that's so delicious, it's the fact that she doesn't get it that she doesn't get it. On the other hand, cluelessness married to political power is not a pretty prospect for the future of a democratic republic. I suppose we've been living with that danger for decades now, and neither political party has a monopoly on either ignorance or abuse of power, so maybe there's hope for us yet. Either that, or heed the sound advice of the late Hunter S. Thompson: "I hate to advocate drugs, alcohol, violence, or insanity to anyone, but they've always worked for me."
