Federal Officials to Pay $42 Million to Family of Child Injured in Forceps Delivery

 The federal government has agreed to pay $42 million to the parents of a young Pennsylvania boy who was left disabled from birth injuries caused by the use of forceps at the time of his delivery. According to an Associated Press news report, the federal government withdrew its appeal and agreed to pay the money. The verdict issued last year by a federal court judge in Harrisburg came after a six-day trial on claims by the parents. Brain Injury Caused by Use of Forceps The couple’s 5-year-old son understands language but cannot speak, read or write and will eventually need to use a motorized wheelchair. The child’s parents sued the federal government for errors allegedly made by an obstetrician at a federally supported women’s hospital. The boy was born in February 2012.
