February 4, 2011 – According to reports a driver crashing into a gas meter caused approximately 70 residents to be evacuated. According to La Habra Police the crash occurred at approximately 9:30 p.m. when a driver suspected to have been driving under the influence struck an above ground gas meter rupturing a natural gas line. The accident occurred in the 500 block of West Fourth Avenue. The driver identified as 18 year old Johathon Huizar, was driving a 1993 blue Isuzu Rodeo and is suspected to have been driving under the influence, according to La Habra Police Lt. Jeff Swaim. Lt. Swaim stated the gas leak was more like a gusher and was inspected by firefighters and shut off by a utility crew at approximately 1:30 a.m. The natural gas line was three-fourths inch steel line, according to Southern California Gas Co. spokeswoman Denise King. There were approximately 20 homes evacuated for safety and the residents were permitted to return after the utility crews shut the ruptured gas line off. The home whose above ground meter was struck by the Rodeo remained without gas service Friday. Huizar a resident of La Habra was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol and being under the legal age to consume alcohol.
