Controversial immigration law affects business license holders

An Arizona law that threatens companies who employ illegal aliens with the revocation of their business licenses is under scrutiny by the U.S. Supreme Court, thanks to a challenge brought by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. Oral arguments over whether individual states can enforce laws against illegal immigrants in the case involving the Southwestern state were made on Wednesday, Dec. 8. The crux of the matter is whether Arizona has the right to penalize businesses that knowingly employ illegal immigrants and whether that conflicts with the federal government's responsibility to enforce immigration laws. Enacted in 2007, the law is opposed by civil rights activists and business groups including the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, the American Civil Liberties Union and the Mexican American Legal Defense and Education Fund. If the challenge fails, other states may be encouraged to enact such legislation, says law supporter Michael Hethmon with the Washington-based Immigration Reform Law Institute, as reported in Bloomberg. More than 40 states are currently considering various measures to tackle immigration issues, which could have far-reaching implications for business license holders.
