Bureaucrats are People

One of the moves made by conservatives in opposing government social services programs is that such programs are administered by unfeeling bureaucrats. It is an easy claim to make and government social service programs unquestionably include some jaded, rule-oriented, and power-abusing individuals. But it is jarringly counterintutive to suppose that the typical worker in a government social services program is unfeeling and inhumane. I know people who have risen through the ranks to high places in the San Francisco social services system. To suggest that they are unfeeling bureaucrats is defamatory. They massively care about the people they serve. One of them regarded it as his lifetime work mission to interpret the rules broadly to do whatever he could to help the people who needed help.
