Bicyclist Killed in Brooklyn After Dooring Accident

A man was fatally injured in a bicycle accident in Brooklyn after hitting a taxi door that was opened, hurling him into the path of another passing car. According to a report in the New York Post, the 26-year-old man was riding a pedal-assist e-bike north on Third Avenue near 28th Street in Greenwood Heights the morning of Jan. 1. A parked cab swung open its door in his path, police said. The cyclist, who reportedly lives just over a block from where the accident occurred, was catapulted over the door into the path of oncoming traffic where a passing car driven by a 53-year-old man rammed into him. The bicyclist was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead. Both the cab driver and the other driver remained at the scene and no arrests were made. Pedal-assist eBikes became legal in New York City over the summer. However, faster throttle-powered bikes remain illegal.
