by Dr. Mario Melgar-AdalidPresident Calderon visited the United States once again. While President Barack Obama spoke about immigration in El Paso, Texas, the Mexican President undertook a full work schedule during his latest visit to Washington, D.C. President Calderon met with U.S. Senate majority leader Senator Harry Reid and Senate minority leader Senator Mitch McConnell. He then proceeded to meet with Nancy Pelosi, Democrat and minority leader in the U.S. House of Representatives, who was also accompanied by another Democratic leader in the U.S. House, Steny Hoyer. The Mexican President also met with Republican and Democratic members of the Foreign Relations, Homeland Security and Intelligence Committees from the U.S. House of Representatives. The Congressional Hispanic Leadership Institute ("CHLI") awarded President Calderon the Leadership Award in International Affairs. While in New York, President Calderon met with Mayor Michael Bloomberg to discuss immigration issues, which was very appropriate for two reasons: 1) New York City has become an important magnet for Mexican migrant workers, especially from the State of Puebla; and 2) Mayor Bloomberg advocates in favor of immigrants' rights. The Mexican President also attended various meetings at New York University ("NYU"), where approximately six thousand Mexican students are currently enrolled. NYU is known for supporting immigrant students, including undocumented immigrants. NYU's policy is not to deprive any student of the right to knowledge and academic development, regardless of their immigration status. The highlight of President Calderon's visit to the United States was the announcement that he will submit a reform package for Petroleos Mexicanos ("PEMEX") to Mexico's Congress, similar to that of the Brazilian state-owned oil company, PETROBRAS. Such reform would preclude PEMEX from offering its stock to the public, but allow it to issue debt in bond markets. This matter will be a subject of much debate during the upcoming Mexican election campaigns.
