By: Nabil Rodriguez* After receiving Senate approval (87-13) yesterday, the House voted to approve (369-47) today the Agricultural Improvement Act of 2018, known as the 2018 Farm Bill. The 2018 Farm Bill is now on its way to President Trump, who is expected to sign it into law. This 2018 Farm Bill includes the full language of the 2018 Hemp Farming Act to legalize hemp federally and regulate hemp like other agricultural crops governed by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. This new law, if signed, allows the states, U.S. territories, and Indian Tribes to submit to the Secretary of Agriculture, through the State department of agriculture, a plan which would monitor and regulate the production of hemp. Additionally, this bill amends the Controlled Substances Act to exempt hemp from the definition of “marihuana” with a specific exemption for THC found in hemp.
